Founded in 2022 by drummer and composer Rim Akandoh Jnr., the band draws from multiple generations of highlife lineage. Their debut album “Man Shall Be Free” reworks compositions from the repertoire of Rim Akandoh Jnr.’s father – the celebrated ‘Mighty’ Rim Akandoh and his Prince Sparrows Band – including material rooted in the Osoode medley traditions of Western Ghana. Alongside this inherited repertoire, Amamere continues to develop a contemporary highlife sound through new original compositions and recent single releases including “Africa” and “The’m Go Talk”.

The band’s songs move between love, everyday life, and socio-political reflection, carrying forward the storytelling and proverbial lyricism central to Ghanaian highlife. On stage, Amamere stretches these traditions into deep grooves, driving horn arrangements and layered percussion built for the dancefloor.

Several members of Amamere are part of enduring musical lineages that have shaped Ghanaian highlife across generations. Rim Akandoh Jnr. was a founding member of Ebo Taylor’s Saltpond City Band, touring and recording internationally during a formative period in contemporary Ghanaian highlife. Trumpeter Emmanuel “Tontoh” Adjei continues a family connection to his grandfather Mac Tontoh of Osibisa.

As the highlife legend Ebo Taylor once said: “Rim Akandoh Jnr. brings the highlife of our time into the future”.
